THE PRIVACY FIELD GUIDE

Understand what your phone reveals.

A clear guide to the three layers of mobile privacy: your network connection, your conversations and your device.

Discuss your setup

1. Connectivity: the network still has a role

A cellular connection requires network infrastructure. SIM and eSIM services identify a subscription to that network. Changing the provider does not by itself remove location-related information or make a device anonymous. Ask which networks deliver coverage and what information each provider retains.

2. Content: choose end-to-end encrypted channels

Supported end-to-end encrypted apps can protect call and message content from intermediaries. Ordinary SMS and traditional carrier voice should not be assumed to have this protection. Check that both participants use the encrypted mode, verify contacts where supported and review backups and linked devices.

3. Devices: encryption is only one layer

Strong locks, current software, careful permissions and secure accounts help protect the endpoints. A compromised device or a recipient sharing a message can expose a conversation. High-risk users should assess their specific threats with a qualified specialist.

Questions to ask any privacy provider

Which communications are end-to-end encrypted? Who supplies the underlying network? What metadata is retained, and for how long? Who controls device management? What happens when a phone is lost? What are the costs, coverage limits and support terms? Ask for concrete answers before activation.
